Danny Green is coming home!
Cleveland is about $2.5 million away from the luxury tax and unwilling to cross that threshold.
Green was traded by the Grizzlies on Thursday. Following a torn ACL and LCL in the same knee in the playoffs last season with the Philadelphia 76ers, Green finally made his season debut with Memphis on Feb. 1, scoring three points in 10 minutes that night. He played in three games, totaling 44 minutes, before being sent to Houston as a salary-filling piece in a multi-team trade that brought Luke Kennard from the Los Angeles Clippers.
While the Cavs use a tight eight- or nine-man rotation most nights and other interested suitors may be able to offer Green more consistent playing time, he would help provide experience for the young Cavs while also bringing added depth to the wing -- a roster weak point that didn’t get addressed ahead of the deadline despite Cleveland making calls on numerous other targets.
President of basketball operations Koby Altman spoke about the Cavs’ chances of making an addition in the buyout market on Thursday. “Depends who becomes available,” Altman said. “We have a roster spot and then it has to fit. I promise you character is really, really important for us. That locker room is -- it’s incredible. And I don’t know other locker rooms, I’m not in other locker rooms, but I know what we have going on is a rare thing where guys love playing for each other, it’s genuine. There’s relationships there, they care about each other. If there’s a person there that can add to that, we’ll do it.
