Dons capped season with Open Division title, and Cathedral Catholic earned the No. 1 national ranking and also have player of year in Julia Blyashov
The last loss was the inspiration for this season’s girls volleyball achievements at Cathedral Catholic High.
“For two weeks I worried the Fat Lady would sing too soon,” Cathedral coach Juliana Conn said. “St. Francis was undefeated as well. “After the state finals, a guy from MaxPreps told me I was the National Player of the Year,” Blyashov said. “I told my parents, but I didn’t know what to say. I told the guy I was almost ready to start crying. I thought maybe I was on a reality show or something.”
“Marymount went off on us last year. They just played better. My girls came back from playing club in the offseason and just caught fire.”The Dons were 106-1 in sets, losing that set to Manhattan Beach Mira Costa in the regional championship match.
