In his time with Glencoe Public Safety, Lewandowski dealt with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, a mass shooting in a neighboring community and some national antagonism toward police.

As he prepares to move on, Lewandowski reminisced on the last 10 years including his initial interest in coming to the village. He said he applied for the public safety director role intrigued by Glencoe’s policy as one of two Illinois communities where officers are cross-trained, not dedicated to either police or fire.Lewandowski said he inherited a “well-functioning” department where some changes were made over time, but on the whole, it is a challenge being a supervisor.
He speaks with pride on how the department responded to the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020 and the accompanying lockdowns. “Everywhere in town, we were trying to be as visible and alert as we could to spot anything that was suspicious,” he said. He concedes recruitment is difficult today as he believes candidates are scared of being sued, there are safety concerns as they might be attacked or “fear of getting prosecuted for doing their job.”
