A car crashed through a Chicago Transit Authority bus shelter in North Lawndale Sunday afternoon, leaving three people hospitalized with injuries, police and fire officials said.
Two cars crashed at the intersection of South Kedzie Avenue and 16th Street shortly after 4 p.m., the Chicago Fire Department said on Twitter. One of the cars also went “through the bus shelter,” the department wrote. In a separate statement about the crash, police said a 42-year-old man was driving a Chevy Malibu when he lost control of the car. He struck a bus shelter and two pedestrians, then continued through a red light and hit a Pontiac Grand Am before stopping.
The 56-year-old woman driving the Pontiac was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in fair condition, police said. The two pedestrians, a 47-year-old woman and a 36-year-old woman, each suffered a fractured leg and were transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. One of the two women transported to Mount Sinai is a CTA employee, according to the Fire Department.
Four other people were affected by the crash, the department said. One woman refused medical treatment at the scene, while a mother and two children walked away without being seen by paramedics, the Fire Department wrote. The 42-year-old man who lost control of the car was issued citations for driving an uninsured vehicle, failing to carry a license, disobeying a red light and failing to reduce speed, police said.
CTA officials said none of the transit authority’s vehicles were involved in the Sunday afternoon crash.
