A tenant says he “lost everything” after a devastating fire killed nine chickens and caused “thousands of pounds” worth of damage to his prized allotment.
Mick Jordan, who is recovering from cancer, has been tending his lot on Livingstone Road, Accrington since 2011. Sunday afternoon’s blaze, under investigation by the fire service, tore through four sheds - including Mick’s - destroying gardening equipment and tools, and wiping out most of his chicken coop.
“I had 14, but nine have died,” he told LancsLive. “I had just left at about quarter past three and got a phone call about 4.30 saying it’s on fire. My heart just sank. I’m recovering from cancer and this is my haven to get away and think and clear my mind. Mick, who said neighbouring plots were also badly affected, has been told that lads were spotted running “hell for leather” away from the back of the site at around the time of the incident.
“There’s some suggestion it’s been done there deliberately because there’s been two fires,” he said. “It’s been a bit of a problem area because they were a bit untidy, but they’ve buckled down and worked very hard. To see all their hard work undone is not good really, and my feelings go out to them. For somebody to come and put a match to it is disgusting, disgraceful and heartbreaking. It’s sad to think that allotment holders can’t have an allotment and be proud of it.
