For many, the Christmas party has been a glimmer of hope. An end of season celebration where you can finally let your hair down, and a chance for employers to show that they appreciate all their staff have been doing this last year.
Some bosses are offering an alternative to the Christmas party. That could be in the form of a cash bonus, a gift or vouchers, or even a bottle of Prosecco as a token of appreciation. ‘It has been a tough couple of years and we were really looking forward to our Christmas parties,’ Baani tells Metro.co.uk.
‘For us, anything that we can do for the staff is something extra, it’s not contractual,’ explains Baani. ‘The staff don’t contribute financially, it’s a chance for us as an employer to give back. ‘I would suggest that the fairest thing to do would be to postpone until Covid rules are lifted again. It might be worth staff speaking with their line manager or HR manager to talk through their preferences. It’s been a difficult time for everyone, so it would be nice for employers to acknowledge this.
However, she also notes that employers may choose to have a party for tax reasons. Employers don’t need to report to HMRC if the; this also applies to virtual events. However gifts and bonuses must be taxed – which might be why they can’t just swap out a party for a whole load of gifts.
