Russia wants Kazakhstan to tow its diplomatic line. Instead, the Central Asian state is exploring options to export oil to Europe
After a storm knocked out loading facilities at Novorossiysk port in March,they won’t be able to handle CPC oil for months, depriving Kazakhstan of its main source of income.
Nur Sultan has been recently exploring alternative routes for oil including the possibility of transporting the crude via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, which passes through Türkiye. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in Russia, June 17, 2022. In the occasion, Tokayev rejected the Order of Alexander Nevsky, a Russian award, signalling Russia-Kazakh tensions. Using BTC to transport oil from Kazakhstan and other Central Asian states to the western market is not a new idea.
