The charity supports more than 400 over-65s across Glasgow, ensuring they don't go without food and meals through deliveries by its volunteers.

The campaign is calling on health and social care chiefs to save Food Train Glasgow - a charity that provides services for older people who are no longer able to manage independently.

However, it has been plunged into financial crisis and faces closure within weeks after the lion's share of its funding provided by Glasgow City Council was cut last week. “It’s a false economy for the health and social care partnership not to support us. Without Food Train, it’s they who will be left to pick up the tab for getting food and meals to those who need them - or for the additional NHS and care support they will need if they fall ill from becoming malnourished. Ours is a cost-effective way of providing critical services.

Another said: “Without Food Train delivering my shopping I will starve. I don’t mean to be dramatic, but I really can’t see any other outcome." Demand on Food Train’s services across Glasgow rocketed by 70% at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic as older people were forced to isolate in their own homes. They have remained consistently high since.

Dollar Stores and Food Access for Rural Households in the United States, 2008‒2020Dollar Stores and Food Access for Rural Households in the United States, 2008‒2020Dollar stores have rapidly expanded their food offerings in recent years. These foods tend to be higher in calories and lower in nutrients, raising public health concerns, especially in rural and low-income areas where food-access challenges are often greatest. However, there is limited empirical evidence evaluating the impact of this expansion on household food purchases on a national scale. Using data from a yearly, nationally representative panel of approximately 50 000 households, we estimated the share of food purchases from 2008 to 2020 by store type and evaluated the role of dollar stores as food retailers in the United States. We found that dollar stores were the fastest-growing food retailers by household expenditure share (increasing by 89.7%), with rural growth outpacing growth elsewhere (increasing by 102.9%). Though dollar stores still represent a small share of national household food purchases (2.1% in 2020), they play an increasingly prominent role in food-at-home purchases for certain disadvantaged and rural communities. Understanding the quality of the foods they offer and how this may affect diet-related health outcomes is warranted. (Am J Public Health.
