John Calipari showed his Kentucky team a Nick Saban speech before beating Alabama.

“Part of it was, you’re worried about the results -- you’re results-oriented, ‘I need more shots, I need more minutes, I got to get this’ -- versus I got to be the best and train myself to be the best at the position I have,” Calipari said after Kentucky’s 90-81 win Saturday. “So when you do have a chance, you’re ready to go.”

A clip from Saban’s speech was posted to social media late last week. Saban said, after injuries to starting wide receivers Jameson Williams and John Metchie, that three players he chose not to name were not ready to perform in the CFP title and, “basically didn’t do the things they needed to do throughout the season because they were frustrated with their circumstance.”

Kentucky played without starting guards Sahvir Wheeler and TyTy Washington and managed to recover from a 13-point first-half deficit to beat Alabama for a second time this season. Kentucky’s five starters averaged 38 minutes and its four-player bench combined for only 12 minutes. “They played the whole game without a point guard,” Alabama coach Nate Oats said. “We only turned them over seven times. We didn’t play hard enough on the ball. We just didn’t play hard enough to win a tough road game, and we had a great chance to win it with Wheeler and Washington out. We wasted an opportunity.”Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
