A heat wave that has shattered temperature records nearly broke California’s overtaxed electric grid Tuesday evening, pushing it to the brink of rolling blackouts.

A surfer paddles out at Huntington Beach. Temperatures are reaching the mid-90s for much of metro Southern California and up to 115 in inland valleys and mountains.

“This will be essentially the worst September heat wave on record, certainly in Northern California, and arguably for the state overall,” said Daniel Swain, a UCLA climatologist. “It might be one of the worst heat waves on record period in any month, given its duration and its extreme magnitude. ... There really isn’t going to be substantial relief in that part of the state until at least Friday or Saturday.

Vehicles travel near high power transmission towers in downtown Los Angeles, Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022. As California stretched into its second week of excessive heat, the California Independent System Operator, the entity that oversees the state's electrical grid, issued a Stage 3 alert allowing it to draw on emergency power sources. The alert is one step below actually ordering rotating power outages.

The challenges are a test of how the state can balance the system when it’s under pressure, said Jan Smutny-Jones, executive director of trade group Independent Energy Producers and former chair of the ISO’s governing board. An excessive heat warning remains in effect for much of California through Friday, with temperatures expected to reach the triple digits in many regions. Forecasters predict that the heat will begin to break over the weekend, as the system shifts east.
