Ninety-three students at BYU's Jerusalem Center, along with faculty, staff and other campus residents, are evacuating amid Middle East violence.

The Brigham Young University Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies, located in the City of Jerusalem, announced Friday that it would be relocating its program out of its building on Mount Scopus asThe center's updates have been keeping the public up-to-speed on the welfare of the students, faculty and personnel living at the center.

That Monday, Oct. 9, the Jerusalem Center reported that students, faculty and other residents were moved to the building's shelters "for a short duration" amid rocket attacks, most of which were were intercepted by the country's intricate Iron Dome, a system that targets incoming rockets and destroys them before they have a chance to hit populated areas.

The site noted that even without the recent conflict and violence "... tensions are always higher in Jerusalem on Fridays as Muslims gather on the Haram esh Sharif for noon prayers," noting that the center was not affected. In the hours following, the Israeli government announced the military would be targeting Hamas militants in the northern territory of the Gaza strip, and the approximately 1.1 million people living there sHamas militants told the affected Palestinians to stay in their homes, saying the Israeli evacuation order was a ploy to divide the country.

The Jerusalem Center Fall 2023 Program is currently relocating to Greece. In addition to the 93 students and faculty, faculty families and service couples will also relocate to Greece.
