The Mayor of Greater Manchester has criticised Wolverhampton Council and claims they are 'undermining public safety'
The mayor Greater Manchester has once again condemned private hire drivers working in the city-region who are signed up with Wolverhampton council. He spoke on the latest ‘In the Hotseat’ programme on BBC Radio Manchester.
“The checks they do aren’t as stringent and it is not right. They are undermining public safety in Greater Manchester.” Private hires are different to regular taxis in that they are available to pre-book only via companies like Uber. They cannot be flagged down on the street like black cabs . In March it emerged that almost a third of England's private hire taxi drivers are registered in Wolverhampton. The city has even had to take on 20 new staff to cope with demand.
“If we can’t resolve this by a requirement that if you are working in a place you’ve got to be licensed there, then I would be very disappointed - but we’d have to go down a different route. Wolverhampton Council say their 'strict and rigorous' process includes a one day training course, enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service checks, a medical certification and a face to face English assessment.
