The government has refused to deny reports the Manchester route will be scrapped
The government is set to axe the HS2 leg to Manchester, according to reports this week. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has now said that if the government goes through with abandoning the major rail build, 'as political betrayals go, it's one of the biggest we've ever seen'.
"This was meant to be the levelling up Parliament, but as we come to the end of it, what we're seeing is increasing rumours that the government is going to cut Manchester out of the new high-speed system. In effect, what they're going to do is leave the southern half of the country with modern high-speed lines, but the northern half of the country stuck with Victorian rail infrastructure.
Mr Sunak has refused to guarantee it will reach Manchester despite £2.3 billion having already been ploughed into stage two of the national line. A photograph of a leaked document, published by The Independent, suggested curtailing the route could save £35 billion. Mayor Burnham continued: "A government that promised the Earth to the north of England, and in the end, is going to deliver nothing when it comes to rail services. I would make this appeal to the government at this eleventh hour as they get ready to take their decision, I understand that the decision isn't yet finally made.
Transport Secretary Mark Harper announced that work at Euston would be paused for two years as costs were forecast to almost double to £4.8 billion. The pause means Old Oak Common, in the capital’s western suburbs, will be the railway’s only London station when services to and from Birmingham Curzon Street begin between 2029 and 2033.
