Burien City Council leaders announced the end of emergency hazard pay for grocery workers on Monday, citing readily available COVID-19 vaccines and boosters as a major turning point in the pandemic. FOX13

According to a press release from Burien City Council, since Feb. 8 2021, a handful of grocery stores in the city have been required to pay an additional $5 per hour for all workers. Food Industry Association , representing the state’s independent grocers, convenience stores and suppliers, said the council’s decision recognizes some communities are reaching milestones in the pandemic.

"As all private and public employers are urging employees to come back to work, it is time to remove these arbitrary and mandatory wage mandates that only apply to a small segment of the grocery store community," said Amanda Dalton, President and CEO of the Northwest Grocery Association .
