Burgers, kebabs and high-end treats: Takeaway love affair deepens despite cost of living crisis. 🍔 The UK takeaway boom eclipses record pandemic sales in terms of money spent and meals bought, as consumers navigate financial squeeze.

The British are spending more money on takeaways and fast food than ever, despite the cost of living crisis, new data reveals.

The report – which found that Chinese food was the most popular – also predicted a permanent shift in consumer behaviour with 60 per cent of people saying they would order the same number of takeaways over the next year. Nasima Begum, the proprietor of Lowestoft Tandoori, a curry house in Lowestoft, Suffolk, with a thriving online home delivery business, said: When Covid-19 hit the hospitality trade thought we would be hit the most but actually it turned out to be the opposite where our income increased a lot more because people weren’t able to go out so they were ordering in.

But the squeeze does appear to be putting people off going out for a meal with a 5.9 per cent hit on restaurant spending in May, compared to April. A staffing crisis is also harming some takeaways’ ability to manage the rise in demand. Lowestoft Tandoori has been forced to shut one day a week thanks to a lack of chefs on staff. And for many takeaways, the rise in operating costs has dwarfed the benefits from the surge in business.
