Madison Bumgarner pitched well once again, but the Diamondbacks didn't give him enough run support and their bullpen and defense struggled in loss to Mets.
“My expectation is that there are certain plays defensively that are unacceptable,” Lovullo said. “We’ve got to tighten that down. We lead the league in errors. That isn’t us. We’ve got to figure that out. We will. We work hard. We’re going to coach these guys up. We’ve got some great teachers.”
On the first play of the game, Alcantara made a wild throw to first, a mistake that led to a run. On a steal attempt in the sixth, he couldn’t come up with a throw by catcher Jose Herrera, who was charged with the error. “Obviously, we haven’t played the way we’re capable of or want to defensively,” Ahmed said. “Some plays that seem routine that need to be made but aren’t being made consistently enough.
“We practice a lot, we just have to keep improving,” Herrera said in Spanish. “These are things that happen, of course, but in key situations we don’t want that to happen. We’re working every day, pretty hard, and everyone in their area -- outfielders, infielders -- is going to get better. We’ve got to eliminate the errors because it minimizes the damage from runs.”
