For both his standout play and how he’s touched the city, Harris is the San Antonio Express-News Sportsman of the Year for 2022, becoming the first UTSA athlete to receive the distinction.
Running his record to 31-11 as UTSA’s starting quarterback, Harris was named MVP of the 2022 C-USA championship game and continued to add to his tally of program records, holding nine single-game marks, 12 single-season records and 13 career records. “Having all of these records, it’s pretty cool,” Harris said. “I looked at those guys a certain way, and then me, leading the charge to some of those things, it’s pretty cool to be in the same category. They're forever UTSA legends, and being talked about in the same category as them definitely means a lot.”
He views the setbacks as a blessing in disguise, reminding him not to take football for granted. On days when practice or a trip to the weight room feels uninspiring, Harris ponders the times he yearned for those opportunities. “I know I’m very blessed, so I just try to keep a smile on my face, and make sure everybody knows we’re living the best time of our lives right now, playing football in college,” Harris said. “I want to be that guy, so people can look at me like, ‘He’s been through all of these injuries, been through all of this adversity, but somehow, he just finds a way to keep a smile on his face.’ I think that’s contagious.
