Brothers of Sri Lanka bombing mastermind said to be dead in safe house battle; Catholics watch Mass on TV
Police officers guard the area near St. Anthony's Shrine in Colombo, Sri Lanka, a week after attacks on Easter Sunday claimed the lives of at least 250 people.
“Our hearts are tested by the great destruction that took place last Sunday,” Ranjith said. “This is a time that questions such as does God truly love us, does he have compassion toward us can arise.”The Mass was attended by President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa, all non-Christians.
Police carry the body of a suspected terrorist after he was killed in a firefight in a house in Sainthamaruthu. A total of 15 people died in the house in the eastern coastal town of Sainthamaruthu. When police approached the building, they said, occupants responded with gunfire and then exploded several bombs inside. Military officials said the dead included six children.
The Easter attacks have been claimed by the Islamic State, but all the individuals who have been identified by authorities as suicide bombers, as well as those who have been detained or sought as suspects, have been Sri Lankan natives. They are said to be affiliated with National Thowheed Jamaath, an extremist Islamist group that has taken root in this multireligious democracy.
