📬 New Broncos Mailbag • Looking for a new head coach • That PI call on Courtland Sutton • Russell Wilson's contract • And more...
It’s impossible to know exactly how to assign blame for the bad season this year. Is it stubbornness from Wilson? A bigger learning curve than expected? Struggling to see the field? His lengthy list of injury issues? Coaching? Communication? The in-and-out nature of almost every single relied-upon offensive skill player? There are plenty of slices for the pie chart. How big each of them should be is impossible to say from the outside.
Is that realistic? It’s not going to be easy. If the breaks fall the right way — let’s say Javonte Williams gets healthy, though it’s a stretch to say he’ll be 100% in September, they find reinforcements on the offensive line and the skill group grows with another offseason working with Wilson — it can be a competitive group.
This has obviously been a topic of conversation, and I guess my first thought is more about what they shouldn’t focus on rather than what they should. They shouldn’t set out to find the opposite of Hackett, which is too often how these searches — not Denver specifically, but in sports generally — go. We had this, it didn’t work, we need something else entirely. Vic Fangio to Hackett is a good example. Defensive guy to offense. Fangio’s grinder style to Hackett’s frenetic energy.
The key for Wilson this offseason is to figure out if his own process — which, by the way, worked pretty darn well for a decade — is still serving him well or if he needs to make changes. He takes his routine extremely seriously but acknowledged last week that he’ll consider changing how he does things.
So if your contention is for one of those guys, the cost is $107 million against the cap plus whatever the new quarterback makes.
