Williams touched the ball on the Broncos' first four plays as he made return from last season's ACL tear
— and immediately showed why it will be hard to keep him off of it. He rushed for 42 yards on six carries, including an eight-yard touchdown run. He caught a nine-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. He set up that touchdown with a 44-yard kickoff return. McLaughlin racked up 97 all-purpose yards and showcased an ability to zip through creases with regularity.“We’ve kind of been seeing it if you’ve been paying attention in practice,” Payton said of McLaughlin’s performance.
Payton this week called McLaughlin a player who can create mismatch problems for defenses, naming Reggie Bush and Darren Sproles as players who filled similar roles inoffenses of the past. Pierre Thomas is another player who could be put in that category. Thomas, like McLaughlin, went undrafted, back in 2007, and performed well enough in training camp that Payton kept him and waived a fourth-round pick at the position, Antonio Pittman.
It’s too early to tell whether McLaughlin will put up that kind of production — be it this season or into the future — but his dazzling preseason to this point has made it easy to envision a significant impact for the NCAA’s all-time leading rusher. Going to go ahead and bump this profile I wrote of Jaleel McLaughlin back in May. None of this is a surprise to those who have seen his journey up close:
