'It was an awesome surprise for us.' Hundreds of people gathered Thursday night to celebrate MiddleburgSB's FHSAA state softball championship.
The school year had already ended when the Broncos' softball squad made history a week ago in Clermont. So Middleburg's players didn't get to experience the cheers and the congratulations in the hallways and the classrooms upon their return home."Honestly, it was kind of surprising," senior pitcher Mallory Forrester said."We expected a celebration but we didn't know how big it was. They never gave us any details. So it was an awesome surprise for us.
That included a 13-inning victory over Tallahassee Lincoln, in a game moved forward 24 hours so that players could attend graduation ceremonies, and a pair of nail-biters at the final four in Clermont. "It just felt really cool that our community comes together and it really supports us, even though our season is done," she said.
