Rishi Sunak cancels meetings with Greek PM amid disagreement over possession of the Elgin Marbles
A spat between the British and Greek governments has broken out over possession of the Elgin Marbles , with Rishi Sunak opting to "cancel" meetings with the Greek PM amid their differing opinions. The Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had been expecting to meet Mr Sunak during his visit to London.
But a source on the Greek side said he and his team had been left “baffled, surprised and not a little bit annoyed” at an apparent sudden cancellation, especially when preventing migrant sea crossings - one of Mr Sunak’s top five priorities - was high on the agenda. The diplomatic row comes after Mr Mitsotakis had used an interview ahead of the anticipated talks to liken the situation over the Marbles to the Mona Lisa painting being cut in half.
