Rather than landing on his backside, he tried to correct his fall and sent all his weight through his lower left leg. “I heard it snap straight away,” he later said. “I yelped. Uncontrollable screams.”
Multiple fractures in his left fibula required a five-inch plate. He also dislocated the ankle, causing damage to the joint and lateral ligaments. Recovery would not be straightforward and nine months would be lost. It was nice then Bairstow was immediately involved in this match, taking a regulation catch off the fourth ball of the day as Glamorgan’s David Lloyd was dismissed by Ben Coad.
