The Yankees were on pace to finish under .500 for the first time since 1992, and on pace to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
Part of the discourse was focused on Cashman’s job status. The 56-year-old signed a four-year contract extension prior to this season. But as the Yankees trend toward their 14th straight season without a World Series victory, and as they seem like a team with no hope and lots of problems to solve on its roster for the offseason, Cashman was asked why he believes he deserves to be the person in charged with turning things around.
“I think we’ve got a pretty good track record here,” said Cashman, whose teams have never finished below .500 and who has won four world championships during his tenure. “We’ve had a real good run of success. But this, at the same time, is not an easy sport. Nothing is guaranteed. So I guess I would counter, I don’t think there’s anybody on this planet that felt that the New York Yankees … a playoff-contending team.
Cashman said whether he would remain in his job would be “somebody else’s decision that’s above me,” referring to owner Hal Steinbrenner. As for manager Aaron Boone, Cashman was noncommittal. Cashman hired Boone to manage the club after deciding the clubhouse had tired of Joe Girardi following the 2017 season, in which the Yankees reached Game 7 of the American League Championship Series.
“I think we’re all going to be evaluated,” Cashman said. “You’re going to see look at every aspect of the operation because that’s what you have to do under these circumstances, and then that takes us where it takes us. Nobody’s happy here. We’re better than this, but it’s not played better than this, and we’ll see. Stay tuned.”
