The Hoops boss is facing a mounting injury list but there is still time left in the window.
But there’s not much chance of Brendan Rodgers feeling particularly fortunate right now. The Unlucky Man, more like. Rodgers arrived in Glasgow to talk of Celtic being in a position of strength, about taking the club to the next level and making a better fist of Europe. Facing the rapidly approaching first Old Firm game of the season with an entire IX either gone or injured certainly wasn’t part of the plan.
Further up the pitch striker Oh yeon-gyu is another one missing. Chuck in the fact Reo Hatate has gone from looking distracted to being inactive and it’s clear the injuries are undermining Rodgers’s attempts to put his own stamp on the side. Without Carter-Vickers and Hatate at Rugby Park in the Viaplay Cup at the weekend, as well as robbing the option of Oh to mix things up. Celtic looked disjointed and disrupted.
But Johnston is back on the grass – and Rodgers is hoping he’s not far off coming to the rescue. The boss said: “I remember seeing him at the World Cup. He was outstanding for Canada. I thought at the time when he arrived in January it was a really good buy for Celtic. He’s a talented player and you get the sense from talking to him that he's very ambitious and committed. He wants to do well. It’s just been a real shame with the injury he’s had that he’s been out.
They want to dream big but the manager has been pouring buckets of cold water instead. He admitted Celts will continue to scour the untapped world markets for gems such as MLS star Johnston as traditional trade routes are being increasingly blocked. In his first spell, Rodgers snapped up Scott Sinclair from Swansea City for £3.5m, a player who’d made more than 100 appearances in the EPL for the likes of Chelsea, Man City, Aston Villa and West Brom.
