She won't let it stop her playing footy and doing 'roly polys on the bed'
A brave young girl who started losing her hair aged just two is raising money for a new wig - because her refusal to slow down means she goes through two every year.
"Someone came up to me and asked me if she had cancer." Shocked at this question, Jamie believes that if more people were aware about alopecia, then it would be a more widely-spoken topic. Erin suffered with asthma as a young child as well as eczema. She also lives with an intolerance to some food, with a peanut allergy - another side effect of the condition.
After receiving the diagnosis, the family drove Erin from their Lancashire home, to consultants in the Lake District and in Manchester, as well as having experts visit their home for treatments and tests. In the end, they discovered that there's nothing that can be done to treat the condition, aside from some "harsh treatment" when Erin turns 18.
Jamie says this was down to a lack of funding, as well as a lack of hair donations which are used to create the wigs. For children such as Erin, who may play football and do "roly polys on the bed", around two wigs a year are needed, with one setting a family back around £1,000. "We did fundraising about five years ago for Alopecia UK and we raised about £12,000 and that was mainly to raise awareness, but it just got busier and busier." Despite the lack of awareness, Jamie says it has got better over the years, with a bald Barbie doll on the shelves and a model for Primark who lives with the condition.
