Canada\u0027s historic link to the Monarchy is increasingly anachronistic and an impediment to democracy itself.
Some excerpts from the oath ministers swear to the lieutenant-governor:
“And yet if any matter so propounded, treated and debated in any such Executive Council shall touch any particular person, sworn of the same Council, upon any such matter as shall in any wise concern his loyalty and fidelity to the Queen’s majesty, you will in no wise open the same to him, but keep it secret . . . until the Queen’s Majesty’s pleasure be known in that behalf.”George VanderBurg, MLA for Whitecourt-Ste. Anne, takes the Oath of Office on May 8, 2012.
The oath administered to federal ministers is modernized and somewhat shorter, but places the same emphasis on secrecy and service to the monarch.
