The Boston Board of Health voted unanimously to end its indoor mask mandate effective Saturday.
Commissioner of Public Health and Executive Director of the Boston Public Health Commission Dr. Bisola Ojikutu recommended Tuesday that the city lift its mandate. As a result, the board followed suit.
“Based on the data we have seen over the past weeks, we can remove some of the prevention and mitigation strategies that have been necessary to protect residents,” Ojikutu said. “I am optimistic about where our city is headed, and the Commission will continue to monitor our key metrics and adjust our policies accordingly.”Boston has a COVID-19 caseload of over 165,000 with a population that is 72% fully vaccinated.
There is an exception for Boston Public Schools and the Boston Public Health Commission, which continue to be under a mask mandate. The board will gather again to discuss school-wide mask mandates on March 9.There was a failed attempt to mandate vaccination among Boston's public safety union workers, including firefighters and police officers. Judge Sabita Singh of the Massachusetts Appeals Court ruled against the mandate on Feb. 15.
