For nonbinary runners, this year’s Boston Marathon isn’t just a running event. It’s a major milestone in the race for inclusion. The 2023 race will include a nonbinary division for the first time in the marathon’s storied 127-year history.

. Qualifying times are now broken down by age groups, and qualifying for Boston — or “BQ” in running vernacular — has become a badge of honor for amateur runners around the world.

“We landed on having the nonbinary qualifications match the female qualifications, because it was the most inclusive,” said Susie Cleary, the BAA director of athlete services.that the organization does not yet have enough data to establish nonbinary qualifying times and that this first year will be used as an “opportunity to learn and grow together.”, called the decision a “good move.

Fedorowski said prize money and awards are “a crucial part of the equation” to create inclusive events, but they should not be the only focus. “For some events, making that change involves multiple stakeholders and amending of budgets, so it can take time,” they said. “I’m more interested in making sure the event is enacting changes that will benefit all who participate in the division.

Fedorowski agrees and said the attention on these events would make it very difficult for someone to enter the division just to circumvent qualifying rules. “This should not be the reason we deny other people, other gender identities, the opportunity to participate in the event,” they said., the first woman to formally enter and complete the Boston Marathon in 1967, said that “public road races have led the way in terms of diversity and inclusion.
