Experts scoured the garden for several hours
A bomb disposal squad was scrambled to a small village in West Northamptonshire yesterday, Monday, April 17, after a resident reported fears were raised of suspected wartime explosives buried in their friend's garden. , all while the unaware owner was away.
Northamptonshire Police announced that officers from Explosive Ordnance Disposal were attending an incident at a property in Litchborough, near Northampton, at 6.20pm. The Force had received a call earlier that day of suspected World War II munitions buried in the garden of a house in Farthingstone Road.
Speaking to Northants Live, a spokesperson from the Ministry of Defence confirmed they contacted shortly before 11.20am by the friend of the occupant, who had recently been told by the previous owner of something mysterious buried in the garden.The previous owner had told the current occupant that an item had been buried near to an apple tree in her garden more than 30 years ago. The worried friend had then contacted the emergency services over fears it could be an explosive device.
Officers and bomb disposal crews cordoned the property and spent the afternoon scouring the garden for explosives. The MoD also confirmed the homeowner was not at the house at the time of the "extensive search". Residents were reassured that no other properties were affected and no evacuations had to take place. No munitions were found in the garden and the operation was called off at 8.30pm.READ NEXT:
