Commentary: While most people are snug in their beds, we’ll be in the dark woods in the early morning hours regardless of what Mother Nature throws at us.
Throughout the day, we trek across the interesting and varied terrain of our public forest preserves. There are hills and ravines, cascading creeks, natural springs and slow-moving prairie rivers. One time we flushed a Wilson’s snipe. Bald eagles are frequent sights, as are belted kingfishers, American tree sparrows and, increasingly, pileated woodpeckers. We drive through a few subdivisions, a carload of birders poking binoculars through cracked windows.
As much as the Christmas count is a holiday pursuit, there are opportunities year-round to tally birds through tools such as the. There’s something special about counting in this oft-hectic time of year, though, when it’s easy to lose sight of nature and all the birds that surround us. You never know what you might see, including all those hardy wintertime robins.
