Beaten only by London and Edinburgh
To some, a perfect Christmas getaway involves a log cabin in the woods surrounded by snow-covered trees and a hot chocolate by an open fire. To others, it could be all about sipping cocktails on the beach and a spot of winter sun.
A Tripadvisor survey found that Blackpool is behind only much larger cities Edinburgh in second place and London, which took the top spot to as places to spend Christmas. Blackpool boasts a host of festive events and attractions including several pantomimes and the Christmas by The Sea winter wonderland village, where visitors can enjoy a free ice rink, browse log cabins, dance under artificial snowfall and soak up nightly festive projection shows.
Blackpool may not match the tropical climates and winter sun of the Canary Islands and Dubai, or the movie-scale grandeur and picture-postcard magic of New York at Christmas, but it is easy to see the town's appeal in the off-peak season and colder months, for all ages. There's historic landmarks such as its famous tower, the Winter Gardens and then beautiful green spaces including the award-winning Stanley Park.
