The world-famous light show dates back to 1879
Thousands of light bulbs lit up in multicolour over six miles along the Fylde coast is a sight we've welcomed for more than 140 years. Of course, we are talking about the world-famous, unrivalled Blackpool Illuminations.
The amazing light show returns once again on Friday, September 1 and will glow until January 1, 2022. And the countdown has got us feeling all nostalgic for how the illuminations have evolved through the decades., starting out with just eight lamps and cost £5,000, which was still a huge amount of money back in 1879. From daredevil engineers installing them with no safety harnesses back in the 1920s to the revolutionary and high-tech neon LED lights we see today.
