- with the next ballot taking place in 2025. Mayoral elections have also been taking place in Greater Manchester as well as East Midland, Liverpool City Region, North East, South Yorkshire, West Midlands, West Yorkshire, York and North Yorkshire, London and Salford. The tradition for council staff to work through the night on election day to declare their results in the early hours of Friday morning was abandoned by many Town Halls during Covid and most areas have not resumed this practice post-pandemic.
The majority of councils will not start counting ballots until the working day starts at 9am on Friday morning and won’t declare the results of their local elections until Friday afternoon, or even later on Friday evening and into Saturday.
