Black community leaders from local organizations spoke out in front of Tempe City Hall to end the sale of flavored tobacco products in the city.

Black community leaders representing local organizations and members of the community spoke out Thursday morning in front of Tempe City Hall to end the sale of flavored tobacco products in the city.

The protest comes after the Tempe City Council abandoned the yearlong push to ban flavored tobacco in the city in early February. The ban was intended to curb nicotine use among children, but according to city council members, it lacked crucial information about how many tobacco retailers would shut down because of the policy.

"If you're gonna continue to promote something to a community, age doesn't matter," Jones said."I think it's a false attempt to mislead what the real problem is." "When you are an elected official, that puts your constituents first and you're close to the ground, you feel compelled and moved to do something," Powe said, referring to her time on the school board and how it compelled her to campaign in favor of the tobacco ban the city was considering.
