The council were alerted to 'many dead seabirds' washing up with one walker describing the scenes as 'apocalyptic'
It comes after scores of seabirds were found dead earlier this month on Ainsdale beach. LancsLive previously reported how Sefton Council were alerted to 'many dead seabirds' washing up along the Sefton Coast with one walker describing the scenes as "apocalyptic"
The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs was informed and has now confirmed that avian influenza, also known as bird flu, has been found in wild birds along the coast. The council has said they are working with DEFRA to "ensure all cases are reported and the dead birds are dealt with safely", the ECHO reports. The council is encouraging anyone who sees a sick or dead bird on our coastline to report it to DEFRA, either by visiting the designated webpage: https://www.gov.
Council officers continue to monitor strandlines, which are lines formed from where debris is left after a high tide, and follow the health and safety measures in place to remove dead wild birds.
