State Rep. James Talarico wants to get abortion on the ballot, a tactic that has had success in other red states.
PUBLISHED 1:04 PM CST Dec. 06, 2022AUSTIN, Texas — Earlier this year, Kansas residents voted to protect abortion access in the state. Michigan and Vermont also enshrined abortion rights in their constitutions. Rep. James Talarico, D-Round Rock, filed HJR 56, to put abortion on the ballot next November
“If we can get the people of Texas a chance to vote on this issue, I think they’re going to vote to bring Roe v. Wade back to Texas; bring choice and freedom back to Texas,” he said. But Seth Chandler, a law professor at the University of Houston, said most people aren’t one-issue voters. So, if given the opportunity to vote on a constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights from legislative action, one might vote for that.
