Since leaving the hit TV show, the Houston actor has sought thoughtful roles on stage and screen

Parsons says the approach that ran through the title was one of the draws for him to do the film, which opens Dec. 9. But even with able collaborators, Parsons also had to condense more than a decade of a life running along a sharp series of changes into less than two hours. Irwin, 72, presents an interesting contrast to Parsons, 49. Irwin’s training was in clowning and vaudeville-type entertainment. From those roots in physical comedy, he’s flourished as a nuanced and expressive actor.Parsons’ big break arrived in 2007 with TV’s “The Big Bang Theory,” where he drew from physical comedy and the stage to play the beloved Sheldon Cooper, a role that earned him multiple Emmys and status, at the time, as the highest-paid actor in television.
“I frequently say that’s my favorite play,” Parsons says. “I remember reading it for the first time when I was going to audition for Jason. I remember going, ‘I’ve never read this, and yet something feels familiar to me.’
