President Joe Biden spoke at an event to discuss gun violence strategies at police headquarters in New York last month.President Biden highlighted his administration's efforts to crack down on gun violence, as rising crime in some big cities has emerged as a potential flashpoint ahead of the midterm elections.
Republicans are highlighting crime statistics to cast Democrats, who lead most major U.S. cities, as soft on crime ahead of November's midterms. Among other things, they have criticized "defund the police" proposals by progressive activists and politicians that would reallocate police funding to social programs. Mr.
Mr. Biden reiterated that his administration doesn't support defunding the police, and is providing grants and other support aimed at putting more officers on the street and offering training. Mr. Biden last month went to New York to tout the Justice Department's work fighting gun trafficking, through the use of so-called "strike forces" within the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that are focusing on stemming the flow of stolen or illegally purchased guns into New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and the San Francisco Bay Area.
