He shared his plans during a 90-minute White House meeting with the Hispanic Caucus Monday.

When Hispanic Caucus members mentioned student loans, the president said he's asked aides to explore his options — a signal to lawmakers that he may be willing to go farther than he pledged during the campaign.

"As far as the president going out and talking about student loan cancellation with different groups, I do think that's a very good sign," said Cody Hounanian, executive director of the Student Debt Crisis Center."I think the president is starting to recognize that student debt cancellation is very popular.

"What this argument all boils down to is, does Biden — or any president, for that matter, under the law — will he be violating federal statute by doing broad student loan forgiveness other than what he's been doing under existing programs?" said Betsy Mayotte, of The Institute of Student Loan Advisors.

"Ultimately, it would be overturned through this approach," said student loan expert Mark Kantrowitz on canceling student loan debt through executive action. He argued the best path to forgive debt would be through the regulatory process, which he said is a slower process, but"much more likely to survive legal challenges."

Dem lawmaker: Biden suggests he'll ease student loan burdenDem lawmaker: Biden suggests he'll ease student loan burdenPresident Joe Biden has signaled he might forgive some student loan debt and further extend the federal moratorium on repayments, a lawmaker who discussed the issue with him said Wednesday. The White House was notably more measured about Biden's stance, but such moves would be a boon to many of the 43 million Americans carrying student loans worth $1.6 trillion, according to federal figures. It would also be a win for Democratic and progressive leaders who have long pressed Biden to carry through on a 2020 campaign promise that as president he would “immediately' cancel up to $10,000 in debt per student.
