A group of Democratic senators is calling on President Biden to waive interest on federal student loans in response to the ongoing pandemic

... [+].Since March of 2020, federal student loan payments have been suspended, and interest on government-held federal student loans has been waived. That relief, initially passed by Congress in response to the worsening pandemic and intended to last six months, was extended several times by both former President Trump and President Biden.

President Biden’s last extension of the student loan payment pause and interest freeze is scheduled to expire on January 31, 2022. Education Department officials have referred to this as the “final” extension of student loan relief on several occasions, suggesting an inevitability to the resumption of repayment.

Last week, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki suggested that the administration is moving forward with plans for borrowers to resume repayment. “A smooth transition back into repayment is a high priority for the administration,” she said, without expressly stating whether or not the administration was seriously considering extending the payment pause or providing other relief for borrowers.
