President Joe Biden praised federal law enforcement officers for their"rapid action" in identifying and detaining the alleged source of a classified information leak, despite reporters approaching suspect Jack Teixeira first.
"I commend the rapid action taken by law enforcement to investigate and respond to the recent dissemination of classified U.S. government documents," Biden wrote in a statement Friday."While we are still determining the validity of those documents, I have directed our military and intelligence community to take steps to further secure and limit distribution of sensitive information, and our national security team is closely coordinating with our partners and allies.
The charging document alleges Teixeira held a top secret security clearance in his position as an IT specialist and started posting about classified information on Discord, a social media platform that has become popular with gamers, around December 2022 and posting photos of the records in the invite-only chat room he led in January. Some of the documents pertain to the Ukraine war, including secret U.S. assessments of Ukraine's capabilities.
"I'm not worried about the leak, but I'm concerned that it happened," he said in Dublin."But I don't know anything there that would be of great importance."
