Democratic House Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, who represents Washington, D.C., said President Biden's decision to support bipartisan legislation overturning the district's new criminal code was an 'anomaly' in his support for D.C. home rule.
The Metropolitan Police Department says there have been 1,182 motor vehicle thefts to date in 2023, a 111% increase over the same period last year.
House Republicans passed such a resolution to disapprove of the council's action, accusing Democrats of going soft on crime as homicide rates are up 37% in Washington, D.C., and car thefts are up 111%, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. However, many Democrats argued that Congress should respect the will of Washington, D.C., elected representatives.
President Biden shocked and infuriated Democrats by announcing Thursday he would not veto a congressional resolution that would block the Washington, D.C. Council's criminal code reforms from becoming law. "I think the president's veto announcement was, if anything, the death knell in the Senate," she said. Norton said Biden has not reached out to her and that she has not spoken with him about the criminal code.
