“Ancestor Trouble” by Maud Newton; “Picasso’s War" by Hugh Eakin and “Foreverland” by Heather Havrilesky.
Somehow, the calendar says it’s December, which means another year of reading books has passed. Like every year, I’ve read more good books than I have room to acknowledge with the highly coveted, entirely invented, completely arbitrary Biblioracle Book Awards. There are so many worthy books it’s going to take three columns of space, which means we’ll just squeeze them in before the calendar resets for 2023. This week: Memoirs and nonfiction.I am not a huge connoisseur of this genre, yet every year at least one book breaks through to provide a profoundly moving reading experience. This year, that book is “Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands” by Kate Beaton, about Beaton’s time working the Alberta oil fields.
, and I’m even more admiring of the candor and humor Havrilesky brings to the story of her union at the end of the year. We could all benefit from such an honest and fair look at our own lives and marriages.
