The incidents come after the terrorist attacks on Israel on October 7 and Israel’s military response in Gaza, the attorney general said.

In the wake of unrest in the Middle East, incidents of Islamaphobia and antisemitism are on the rise in schools in New Jersey, the state’s Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin said in a statement Friday night. He did not cite specific incidents in the statement.

“In the wake of the terrorist attacks on Israel on October 7 and Israel’s military response in Gaza, there has been a marked increase in bias targeting Jewish and Muslim community members in K-12 schools and on college and university campuses across our state,” Platkin said in the statement, released in conjunction with the director of the Division on Civil Rights, Sundeep Iyer.

“The rise in bias in our schools threatens the safe educational environment to which all our students are entitled.”by the New York, Northern and Central New Jersey chapter of the Anti-Defamation League. Incidents in 2022 increased by 10% from 378 in 2021 to 408 in 2022. The new totals were the highest New Jersey has ever recorded, according the research, and the third highest of any state in 2022. The record high registered last year came on the heels of a 25% increase the year before, a record high at the time.found 152 complaints of anti-Muslim or Islamaphobic incidents were reported in 2022, up from 104 in 2021. Both the ADL and CAIR reports note that the reported incidents do not account for incidents that went unreported.

The joint statement advised school districts and college campuses to balance the protection of free speech and “facilitate age-appropriate dialogue and conversations that are rooted in accurate information and that avoid stereotypes, hateful slogans, or tropes that may fuel antisemitism, Islamophobia, or other forms of bias.”If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
