MASON — A freshman who dominated central Ohio and a duo from one of the area’s hottest programs made it through the opening day of the state girls tennis tournament Oct. 21 at Lindner Family Tennis Center.

She trailed Nyborg 3-0 in the first set before bouncing back from her first adversity of the postseason. Bowles won five matches at sectional and three at district and did not give up a point. Cornelius and Francois opened with a 7-6 , 3-6, 6-3 win over Mason’s Risha Chada and Harshita Uppuganti and then beat North Canton Hoover’s Claire Wood and Angelina Koinoglou 6-2, 6-3 in a quarterfinal.

“I looked at the draw and just do my best and see what I can come up with,” Gerald said. “ ready to go out swinging.”
