A look back at the best episodes of 'ER,' the medical drama on NBC that helped shape generations of procedural television.

ER set the tone for primetime television – it reinvented the medical procedural with the pulpy melodrama of a nighttime soap and the blockbuster execution of a feature film. Despite its age, ER is still a unanimously enjoyable hour of riveting mid-90s to early aughts basic cable TV. Initially envisioned as a feature film in 1974 by author Michael Crichton — ER was based on his experience as a medical student working in a training hospital’s emergency room.

“Blizzard” What begins as a lazy snow day at County General descends into medical madness when a 32-car accident floods the emergency room with patients. “Blizzard” begins light and easy-going before abruptly switching into a stress-inducing, pulse-pounding hour of life and death stakes.

“Exodus” When an explosion at a chemical warehouse sends a handful of its workers to the ER, the staff is unknowingly put in danger by a toxic benzene leak. Carter swoops down to the rescue and pivots with the youthful essence of an NBA point guard. He jumps in headfirst, blindly but confidently, and leads his team and his patients to safety – in another groundbreaking episode of dynamic disaster movie entertainment in less than 60 minutes.

“The Show Must Go On” In this Season Finale episode, the ER staff throws a surprise going away party for Carter – in Noah Wyle’s last season as a series regular. After being on the show for eleven consecutive seasons, from the pilot in 1994 to the 11th season finale in 2005, “The Show Must Go On” serves as a proper sendoff for ER's last original cast member – and it could’ve ended there.
