Council officer tells City Hall 'everybody wants street trees'
A Belfast council officer has said the authority had to follow “a fine line” over street trees after a DUP councillor said “lots” of people in her South Belfast constituency were complaining about them.
A council officer said: “We are involved in a lot of consultation - and you are absolutely right, people did come with those comments too. In the likes of Collingwood Avenue in the Holyland where they are right outside the door and Donegall Park Avenue. Street trees there are a big concern. “When I started at the council 40 years ago, there were very few trees planted in the city centre. But we tried so hard to get them in, in my time we planted 6,500 street trees, and it has made such a difference.”
The public response gave a number of instructions to the council, including that there should be more trees and green spaces within the city boundaries and city centre, and there should be more volunteering in tree planting. The plan also recommends a detailed canopy cover assessment, including woodlands and hedges, the creation of an “opportunity tree planting plan” for both hard and soft landscape areas across the city, and a “tree equity” mapping exercise, in partnership with the Woodland Trust.
