A spokesperson for Belfast International called the research 'a small and unrepresentative sample of passenger numbers'.

The consumer group Which? spoke to nearly 4,000 passengers over the last 12 months, asking them to score airports across 11 categories, including seating, staff, toilets queues at check-in, bag drop, passport control and security.

London City came second with an overall score of 78% and completing the top five airports were Southampton , Bournemouth , East Midlands and Newcastle . The survey comes just two days after a UK air traffic control failure that led to major travel delays. In response, a spokesperson for Belfast International Airport said: "Belfast international Airport is proud to give local travellers access to a wide range of destinations across the UK and Europe and we are continually developing and growing our route network.
