Chinese authorities in Beijing have reopened one of its mass isolation centers in hopes of avoiding yet another coronavirus-related city lockdown like Shanghai's monthlong shutdown.
The center, Xiaotangshan Hospital, can hold more than 1,000 beds and allows the city to host several infected cases in an isolated location. The center was quickly constructed in 2003 to treat patients with SARS and reopened in 2020 to treat COVID-19 patients, according to the New York Times.
COVID-19 infection numbers have been low in the Chinese capital. Only 400 cases have been reported since April 22, but city officials have been under pressure to stamp out any outbreaks. Beijing residents are required to prove they are negative for COVID-19 if they wish to enter public spaces, according to the BBC. The city also announced that it would test its 20 million residents on Thursday.Shanghai continues to struggle with its mass lockdown.
